#47 - Bed Time

Okay, since I already didn't finish, I'm not going to bother waiting up for the end in an hour. Before I hit the hay, I want to send a quick shout-out to my five awesome sponsors who helped me raise $66.15 for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. Thanks so much for your support and your comments!!

I'm pretty sure I'll be back next year. I don't know what charity I'll be blogging for, but I had a good time with this and I'd love to do it again!

Congratulations to all who finished, and even to those who didn't - you should still be proud of the money you've raised today; it's going to some really great causes!

Sweet dreams, bloggers!

#46 - Nineteen Hours

I guess this means I didn't wake up in time. :(

#39 - Keep On Trucking

Well folks, we're almost there. I don't really have much to say, so I think that for this next 30 minute segment, I am going to have a lie-down. It's not time enough to really sleep, just enough to rest. And then I'll go back to playing computer games for the rest of the morning.

*sets phone alarm for 4:20 am*

#38 - I Knew It

Yup, as soon as I got up here, I ended up napping through a post. I fail. Time to set my alarm clock for every half hour from now on, just in case. :\

#37 - The Big Move

Okay, so I relocated up to my bedroom. However, this gives me two new concerns.

First, it is really freaking hot up here. Especially when I have my door closed (I normally leave it open to let air move, but I also normally don't have my light on at 3am) and have a computer sitting on my bed. It's on a cooling tray, but that's the best I can do since I don't have a usable desk. I have a desk, but it is covered with an Amiga DOS Commodore II. Awesome as that computer may be, it was built before the internet and will really be of no use to me during the Blogathon.

Second, I'm hoping that I might get more sleepy since I'm sitting on my bed with my big comfy boyfriend pillow behind me.

Before I came up, I grabbed a nice cold bottle of green tea (with ginseng! and honey!) which will hopefully help me with both of these issues. I've already changed out of my t-shirt and jeans into a camisole and boxers. This one bottle of tea isn't gonna last me for six more hours! Ah well... I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

#36 - I Collect!

This was the most recent 'thon game, but I can't be bothered to e-mail it in time, plus it won't win so whatever.

The prompt is to write about what you collect.

I collect bells. I'm not sure off the top of my head how many I have, but I know it's around 200. Why do I collect them? Well, the first one that I got originally belonged to my Nana. It's a pretty silver bell, painted black with blue and green stripes, and a silver handle that twists around at the top and has a leaf on the twist. It sounds ridiculous when I try to describe it, but it's awesome. I found it in the basement one day when I was like 6 or 7 years old and my mom told me I could have it, and told me about collecting and said I could collect them if I wanted. So I started buying bells at touristy gift shops on every vacation. My Aunt Mary started sending me bells for my birthday and Christmas. And thus, a collection was born.

My favorite bells... I have one that Cristina gave me for my 20th birthday, it's a really large bell, and it's a gorgeous dark red glass. I have one that Julia bought me at Busch Gardens; the handle is shaped like a castle. There's a special place in my heart for that original bell that belonged to my Nana; I call it my apple bell because of the apple leaf that's on it.

#35 - Tri-Duel

I just beat the Master level Tri-Duel Challenge on Peggle.

Pizza flavored Pringles are gross.

My dad is going to be up in about 3 hours. I'm going to have to at the very least take lappy up to my room sooner or later, cause he won't be happy to see me still up when he gets up. Even though he will see my light on anyway. Whatever. I'm starting to get sleepy :\

#34 - Peeling

I'm back to watching the Deadliest Catch, and I've recently started peeling off my toenail polish. Yippee.

I've never told anybody this before, but I pluck hairs off the top of my feet and my toes. The hairs are blonde, but they just gross me out. lol.

What's something you don't normally reveal about yourself? I'm not asking for your deepest darkest secrets... just something to entertain me and make me feel less weird, lol.

#31 - Chihuaha, Chihuaha, Wipe the Sweat, Wipe the Sweat!

I just changed the channel to ABC Family because Kyle XY is on at midnight. Apparently Grease was on just before Kyle XY. I turned it on right as "We Go Together" started.

Grease was my first musical.. I was in it in Spring 2001. And I still know every step of the dance to that song. It was the first number we choreographed. We were split into groups based on where we would be, and then each group was assigned one phrase (ramalamalama, shoobopshoowaddawadda, etc). I was in the "Chang chang, changity chang shoobop" group. We had to choreograph our phrase, and then teach it to the rest of the cast so we could put it all together.

Matt Berger was in my group. I have a very distinct memory of him teaching our phrase to everybody else. On the first chang, you raise your right leg and touch your ankle with your left hand, then switch for the second chang. Then on changity chang shoobop, you swipe your right hand across your forehead, then your left hand. The way he taught everyone to remember it was to pretend you're a mailman and you're being chased by a vicious little puppy who's biting at your heels and you're trying to smack him away while you're running. Chihuahua! Chihuahua! Wipe the sweat, wipe the sweat! :)

Matt Dallas is so adorable. I love Kyle XY so hard!

#30 - Update

So far, I've got three donors and I'm up to $45.40. If you're reading this and haven't made a pledge yet, it would be really awesome if you would consider it! If you haven't read back to the start, I'm blogging for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, which donates instruments to schools that can't afford to have music programs. If you'd like to make a pledge, you can go here. Thanks!!

#29 - Life in General

I'm eating a bowl of Life cereal. It's quite delightful. Every time I eat Life cereal, I'm reminded of the Game of Life. I used to think the Game of Life was my favorite board game, but then I would play it once in a great while and realize that it's really lame. I think the reason I thought it was my favorite was because I never really had the chance to play it. I went to YMCA day camp for several years, and we had this place called the Barn. The Barn was where we would go in the afternoons when it was too hot to stay outside. There were books and cards and board games and I think maybe a ping-pong table, but I might be imagining that part. They had the Game of Life at the Barn, but I never had the chance to play because it was in use frequently, and when it wasn't, I couldn't find anyone who wanted to play. So I figured, it must be a really awesome game since people are always playing it and I never get the chance to try. So I decided it was my favorite.

Then I played it and realized that it's boring and difficult.

My cereal has gotten soggy while I've been typing this. I am not a fan of soggy cereal.

#28 - Ocarina of Time

Okay, this is the last video post I'll do for a while.

This is a string quartet at James Madison University performing in a student's senior recital. Gamers may recognize the songs. But even those who don't can still enjoy it!! :)

#27 - Don't Wake the Baby

Youssef is all tucked in to bed. I just thought I would make one more post before I leave, since I probably won't be home for another 15 or 20 minutes.

I'm kinda digging this YouTube video thing, so I'll throw a silly one at you before I go. Here's Virginia Tech's Marching Virginians (well, at the very least it's the Sousaphone section) performing the Hokie Pokie, like they do before the 4th quarter of every home game.

#26 - That Didn't Last

I think I put Youssef to sleep with my reading. We got about halfway through Chapter 2 though! Anyway, here's another video that I love. Disney's EPCOT used to have a drum and bugle corps that played in the park, called the Future Corps. This is them doing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." You can find a whole lot more of their music by doing a quick YouTube search for Future Corps :)

#25 - I've Been Blogging for 12 Hours Straight

Nothing new to report here. We finished Aladdin and now I'm reading aloud from HP7, because I know Youssef will never read it on his own. He'll listen to the audiobook eventually, but that's not really the same because he can't stop and ask questions. :P

Yayyyyy Harry Potter! :)

#24 - Halfway There

In case you didn't guess it, Youssef wrote that last entry.

Anyway, I thought I'd get back on track with the music thing and post a video that I really enjoy. I don't envy this girl's dancing skillz, but I think it's pretty awesome that she can dance and play at the same time... cause I've played the viola since I was 9 and there's no way I could play like that. Dancing at the same time, but also style-wise. I keep regretting that I quit after high school. I tried to set up some lessons this summer with Mr. Slocumb, but it didn't work out because he spent most of his summer in the Philippines. Anyhoo, here's the video.

#23 - Don't you dare close your eyes

I'm a big dork :-P But my bf likes me. Which is good. We're watching Aladin and it's awesome. Anybody else remember the TV show? It was pretty good for being an animated TV show based on a disney movie. Better than the stupid little mermaid TV show! Timon and Pumba was good though :-P

#22 - the DIamond in the Rough

It's been forever since I've seen this movie, but I love it. I considered titling this entry "Good Teenagers, Take Off Your Clothes" but I figured that would be inappropriate.

Fresh fish, we catch 'em you buy 'em!

In case you haven't noticed... I ran out of relevant things to discuss about 8 hours ago. I didn't really plan ahead and figure out something to do to keep myself busy and on-topic. I'll have to keep that in mind for next year!

I hope your days are going well so far... here's to 14 more hours of blogging!

#21 - My Nose Itches

Doesn't that mean I'm going to kiss a fool? Or something like that.

There's a news clip on right now about a Little League coach who has been in a wheelchair and using a ventilator since he was 7 (almost 60 years), and is apparently a really awesome coach. That makes me happy. :)

#20 - a Bottle of Red, a Bottle of White

Okay, so the smoke was from something that's burned on the bottom of the oven. I still think he should have pre-heated but whatever. He's in the shower now, and he jokingly said I should go buy a bottle of wine. Gross. Anyhoo, I am posting this a little bit early because I don't want to overcook the lasagna so I should probably be getting it out soon.

Unfortch for me, I'm really craving a salad, but I'm pretty sure his mom didn't leave any veggies in the fridge since she's been gone for days... and if she did, I'm pretty sure I don't want to eat them. Slimy!

Anyway, it's dinner time. Hope you enjoy yours! :)

#19 - Here

I'm at Youssef's house now. I'm pretty sure this kid never learned how to cook. His mom left about 2/3 of a dish of lasagna in the fridge for us, and he stuck it in the oven without preheating, and the gas is making puffing noises and it's weird. Hopefully I won't die from it.

He asked if I was going to sleep over tonight. I said "sure... but I have to be up until 9am" and he grumbled at me. He's grumbling at me now for writing about it. :)

#18 - Taking my Time

I really have nothing to say. I love CSI, but it's really graphic and disgusting. I need to get gas, so I'm gonna leave now and do that. The next time I post will be from the casa de Youssef. Rock on. :)

#17 - Comment Bomb

Blogathon set a new challenge, for every blogger to visit at least two random 'Thon sites and comment. These are the sites I commented... you should check them out :)

1. Potterthon - an all HP 'thon blog! They're blogging for First Book.
2. Laci's Crusade - blogging for the WHAS Crusade for Children.

#16 - Situation: Candlelight

I just got off the phone with Youssef. He'll be home from VT in about an hour, so I'll be headed off to his house to enjoy a romantic dinner of leftover lasagna and hang out and watch movies or something. His mom and sister are at the beach so it'll be nice to have the house to ourselves. Although I'm so used to his dog, Max, being there! It'll be really quiet without Max. He's staying with some family friends until Youssef's mom gets back from vacation. :\

Totally random: what is "pursing your lips"?
This is me on the left and my bff Julia on the right, taken while ice skating last winter. Is either one of us pursing our lips? We can't come to a conclusion about this one.

Yargh. It won't fit, and I don't feel like saving it to my comp so I can edit it, because I'm a lazy bum. Maybe this link will work.

#15 - Consolation Prize

I was playing along in the "How Many Marbles?" game over on PlanetMike. I failed, but I get to choose a CD from the list he sent me for a consolation prize.

But then, get this: Michael Clark (the one at PlanetMike) sent me another e-mail, commenting that he had read my post earlier where I talked about Seussical. Apparently, he lives in my county and runs a local theatre website, and invited me to write reviews for the site, ShowBizRadio.

Awesome! I'm off to make a pledge for Mike's charity, the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation.

#14b - More responses

Allison asked, "Should I take a shower, or continue reading HP? Will this rain flood my basement? Will I ever get out of the Boston area? Do you recognize who I am yet? "Where's the love?" Why does Delphi suck? Will I get to go on a business trip somewhere nifty?"

Take a bath and read HP at the same time! Or if that's not possible... shower then read.
Probably.
Sure, if you come to DC.
Yes! It took me a bit but I got it. :p
It makes the world go round and round!
Um.. the Oracle at Delphi? I don't know what you're talking about.
Probably! I'll keep my fingers crossed for Melbourne. :)

#14 - Responses

I got two questions in the comments to my last post.

Lauren asked, "What other tattoos do you have planned, if any?"

Right now, I'm not planning any. My sisters and I have mentioned one that all three of us would get - three flowers, one representing each of our birth months. But.. I'm kind of flowered out right now! I do want more, but I have no ideas at the moment.

Btperk asked, "What should I have for lunch? Should I bother shaving today? Do I really want to leave the house today, or should I just be lazy?"

For lunch, I vote tomato soup and grilled cheese :)
Yes to shaving
and it's always good to get outside!

In other news, I am submitting photographical evidence of a two-year-old argument to www.passiveaggressivenotes.com, since Lauren mentioned the site earlier and I remembered that I had the pictures. Hilarious!

#13 - The Early Afternoon Lull

I have nothing whatsoever to discuss right now. So... to the few of you who are reading.. ask me a question? That's the only interesting-ish thing I can think of to say for my 3pm post.

My dad is about to go to the bank, so Erin and I will commandeer the TV while he's gone and watch some episodes of Degrassi we DVR'd. :D :D

#12 - If You Can't Get Through It, You Can Listen To It

The mail just came, and I have an envelope from Ticketmaster! So I now officially have tickets to the September 15 Hanson show in Baltimore. Shweeeeeeet.

Speaking of Hanson... they've also done some of their own charitable work. They've recorded some songs with two children's choirs in Africa (one in South Africa and one in Mozambique). One of these songs, the Great Divide, was released as an iTunes exclusive (long before the most recent album came out), and the proceeds from this song go to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa. It's the largest AIDS hospital in the southern hemisphere.

To download a rockin' song and do a little bit to help fund AIDS research, click here!!
Oh, and if you noticed the text in my foot tattoo (picture posted a few entries down) - it says "ngi ne themba" which means "I have hope" in Zulu. It's a lyric from Great Divide. :)

#11 - BoredomTakes Over

I find it fascinating how I can sit around at work for eight hours a day doing absolutely nothing and have ways to entertain myself, but now that I'm not at work I'm bored.

Looks like we're watching Clear and Present Danger now. Which is not nearly as exciting as Deadliest Catch!!

Youssef will be home in about 4 hours; then I'm going over to his house to eat lasagna and probably watch a movie or something, and keep on bloggin! Weeeeeeee.

#10 - See You in Solla Sollew!

Last night, I went out to see two of my good friends, Walid and Scott, in a production of Seussical. It was SOOOO good! Wally played the Mayor of Whoville, and Scott played the Cat in the Hat. It was actually way better than I expected it to be, lol.

Every time I see some of my younger friends in a play, I start to miss theatre again. I know I've made the right choice in dropping it, because for my mental health it's really not worth it. I love it so much (I'm minoring in it!) but it makes me so miserable. I was really seriously depressed all throughout high school, and now looking back on it I can't help but wonder how much of that was related to my participation in theatre. Last summer, I was cast in a production of Godspell with Wally and Scott, and within less than a week of rehearsals I started feeling like I had before. And it's really not worth it to me. I'll continue studying it, but I can't work in it. More power to those who can! I'll just have to be content in watching. And maybe my English degree will lead me to be a theatre critic! We shall see.

#8 - Andy the EmoBunny

I have a rabbit named Andy. She is fabulous and I love her very very much. Lauren's last post over at greater-than-us.blogspot.com inspired me to make a post about her.

So... I will leave you with a link to her photobucket album here.

She is adorable, y/n? (I'll give you a hint: the correct answer is y)

#7 - Lunchtime

I had a turkey sandwich, some cheese and crackers, and a big glass of milk. It was highly satisfying!

Between my last post and this one, I busied myself e-mailing Hanson and Trent from Pink is the New Blog to ask for donations. I figure.. the worst they can do is ignore it or say no, right? It wouldn't hurt to try!

I'm still watching the Deadliest Catch. I think there's a marathon or something today... this is AWESOME!

#6 - So Fresh and So Clean Clean

That was a really great shower.
But it got me thinking... why on earth do razorblades costs so much? I opened a new pack of blades this morning and recalled that when I bought them last week, my grocery bill was over $70. I bought like.. juice, apples, cheese, facewash, tampons, and razor blades! Maybe a little more than that, I forget. But eight razor blades was $20. That's ridiculous. :\

I wonder what I can make for lunch! I'll go investigate.

#5 - Shower Time!

Okay, it is 10:30 and I am going to take a shower. I'm telling you this because I probably will not be back by 11 to make my next scheduled post. BUT. Have no fear, for I WILL be back. And I will be clean!

#4 - Five Dollar Fairy

Blogathon.org challenged me to choose an active participant with few or no donations, and become their $5 fairy. I chose to support musicxunited, who are blogging for the Music For Troops fund.

Now I will present you with the same challenge. If you're reading this and you've got $5 to spare, head to the Blog List and find somebody who could use it. Thanks!

#3 - In Which I Ramble

Okay, so now that I've explained what I care about, I should tell you who I am. My name is Katie. I'm 21. I live in Springfield, VA. I've spent the last three years at James Madison University and am transferring to Virginia Tech for this coming fall.

I'm spending most of the day lounging around the house with my dad (and my sister, whenever she gets home from Girl Scout camp where she's a CIT). The boyfriend, Youssef, is coming home from VT today so I might go over to his house and continue blogging from there.

I'm watching the Deadliest Catch right now. It might be sad how much I love this show. But... it's awesome. And I kind of have a crush on Mike Rowe.

#2 - Are You Listening?

The title of my blog is "Are You Listening?" Yes, it refers to music in general. But it also refers to my favorite band, Hanson. It's one of their most popular, most-repeated lyrics, from the song "Lost Without Each Other" off their 2004 album Underneath.

This line has become a sort of slogan among Hanson fans and the band itself. Hanson left their major record label to form their own indie label, 3CG Records. Now that they've been on their own for a few years and know just what it means to be independent, they've created an organization called Are You Listening? which is a collection of indie artists.

AreYouListening.com has a simple message. We are passionate about music and dedicated to bringing attention to music by independent artists and independent thinkers. At a time of complacency about music and rampant corporate mergers, the future of music is in the hands of the ones that value it most: artists and their fans. Our ultimate goal for AreYouListening.com is to offer a place where artists and fans can come together to discover new music and build a stronger collective community by featuring artists' content and putting forth an arena for fans and artists to communicate. This inspires music lovers and enables independent artists to stand on their own two feet with or without record company affiliation, organically exposing their music to a larger group of active music fans.

So... I say check it out. There are links to the websites of a whole bunch of different artists. Who knows, you just might find a new favorite band. :)

#1 - Hands Across the Sea

Time to get this show on the road!

I figured I'd start out with a little tribute entry to the charity I was originally considering. My former orchestra teacher, Brendan Slocumb, has created a charitable organization called Hands Across the Sea. He had the idea after visiting the Philippines and working with an alternative school for at-risk students. It has been shown time and time again that at-risk students benefit from music programs, by giving them something productive to concentrate on. Understanding music also tends to help students with math, because it is all about recognizing patterns.

Unfortunately, this area in the Philippines is very poor, and the school cannot afford music programs. So Mr. Slocumb saw another way to help. Hands Across adopted a family. The money that the organization has raised has gone to cleaning up this family's life. They've been given the opportunity to visit a dentist for the first time in their lives. They've been given good shoes and clothes. As Hands Across grows, they hope to raise more money for the community, and give everybody these opportunities.

I was not able to blog for Hands Across the Sea because the paperwork has not yet gone through to make it an official 501(c)3. However, I know that Mr. Slocumb was on to something when he had the idea to bring music to underprivileged students. That is exactly what I want to do. I was fortunate enough to go to school in a fairly wealthy district, where instrumental music programs were the norm. I think that every student, regardless of how much money they have, should have this opportunity. I guess I can't say exactly how much it helped me, since I don't know what it's like to not grow up around music. But I do know that my classes with Mr. Slocumb helped me grow - not only as a musician, but as a person. Everybody deserves that chance to grow.
I've got about 10 minutes to go until the Blogathon starts. I'm still accepting donations here. But even if you can't donate, you're more than welcome to keep me company! I'll be here all day so feel free to comment, or IM me at torridstory, or gtalk me at kmdooley. It'll be fun! If you've got anything you'd like to see me blog about, let me know! :)

Donate please!!

I am using this journal for my participation in the Blogathon 2007 on Saturday, July 28. Blogathon begins at 6:00 am Pacific Standard Time and runs for 24 full hours, with a new entry every 30 minutes. I am blogging for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, a charity organization that works to restore instrumental music programs in public schools in America. In the last ten years, Save the Music has donated more than $34 million worth of new instruments to schools across the country, affording over 800,000 public school students an opportunity to understand music and learn an instrument.

What I need from you, dear readers, is a pledge or donation. You can choose to donate a flat fee, or make an hourly pledge. Please follow this link to submit your pledge or donation.

I'm hoping to blog mainly about music. If you've got anything you'd like to see, let me know! Please come back on July 28 as I attempt to write 48 entries in 24 hours.

Thanks!!
